A recent rumor indicates that Sony may be planning a new PaRappa the Rapper game for the PlayStation 5. This classic PlayStation title gained popularity in the 90s but has largely faded from Sony's spotlight in recent years. Originally released in 1996 for the PS1, PaRappa the Rapper distinguished itself as an innovative rhythm game during a time when the genre was relatively uncommon, largely due to its charismatic protagonist, PaRappa the dog.
The franchise expanded with a spin-off, Um Jammer Lammy, in 1999, and a sequel for the PS2 in 2001. However, no new titles have been released since then, with PaRappa making only cameo appearances in games like PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale and Astro’s Playroom. According to a report by DJ Akademiks, rapper Playboi Carti is reportedly finalizing a multi-year deal with Sony to voice the main character in the upcoming PaRappa the Rapper game. The report also suggests that other artists may be involved in the project, which is rumored to be developed for the PS5. While such rumors should be approached with caution until official confirmation is provided, the enduring popularity of the PaRappa franchise may motivate Sony to revive one of its most beloved rhythm games for the current console generation.
If these rumors are validated, PaRappa the Rapper won't be the only PS1 franchise making a comeback. Last month, it was announced that Fear Effect would be remastered for modern consoles. Unlike the rumored new PaRappa game, Fear Effect will be a remaster and is set to be released by Limited Run Games for PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Additionally, another classic PlayStation title, Patapon, may also be making a return soon. Originally launched for the PSP in 2007, Patapon allows players to act as an invisible deity guiding small creatures called Patapons and was a commercial success. Rumors about a new Patapon project emerged after Sony showcased brief snippets during CES 2024, but the game has yet to be confirmed for development.
